FATTI NIGHT AT THE MALTESE CULTRURAL CENTRE - ALBION

Once every six weeks, the regular Ghana session in Albion on every Thursday night, is being dedicated to Ghana Tal-Fatt. Ghana tal-fatt is the Maltese form of story telling similar to cantastorie in Italy and various others found in Southern Europe.

Such a night was presented on the 21 February, staring at 7:00 in the evening. The show was compered by Edwin Baldacchino who is a local Melbourne, actor/singer who is called upon to direct many other Maltese functions in the Maltese Community, particularly in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne where many Maltese live.

Fredu Cassar, a Gozitan, who was the organiser, selected the singers and even took part himself. The guitarists were led by prim Zanzu Vassallo "ta' l-Ilma" who played very ably on the night.
The accompanists varied between Tony Camilleri "ta Sponos", Leli 'il-Fus", Reno "ta Geelong" u Salvu Gauci with Zanzu playing prim (lead).

The ghannejja were Salvu Gauci "il-Karakariz"
George Aquilina "Nofs Il-Lejl"
Fredu Cassar "L-Ghawdxi"
Joe Fenech "Il-Mosti"
Gustav Tonna,
And Gaetu Sammut, .
Manuel Casha was invited to deliver a speech on the history of Ghana.

The night also coincided with the visit of the young Ghannej from Malta, thirteen year old Tony Spiteri.
Terry Muscat, the President of the centre called young Tony and his guardian Mikiel Bonnici "in-Negli" on stage, where made a presentation and reciprocated by young Spiteri.

The topic of the fatti varied considerably
The audience, which packed the hall to the rafters, had a good time, and such was the success a decision was made to hold it every six weeks.

It is good to see that all genres in Maltese Ghana are being kept alive. It will be even better if we see more "Ghana fil-Gholi" (Ghana in a High key) which is very traditional and has very early roots in the story of Maltese traditional music.
